Al Hayat offers ESOL with
Citizenship courses from Pre – Entry level to
Entry Level 3 in order to guide and develop
learners’ skills to live and work in the UK.

Our ESOL progression classes are generally 12 weeks long, with 2, 3-hour ESOL sessions weekly, from 9.30 – 12.30pm.

Project classes also include ICT sessions and integration visits and invited speakers. This allows the learner to become more integrated into the local community, and develop more skills for work and life in the UK.

ENTRY 2/3 – ESOL PROGRESSION – SYLLABUS
The Syllabus relates intrinsically to that described in the ESOL Curriculum.
 

Speaking & Listening

  •  Listen, understand & reply correctly – to people you talk to / on the telephone.
  • Listen for gist (main ideas) or details on T.V., tapes or radio.
  • Ask & answer questions correctly, in many different situations:

         –  to give information
         –  to give instructions
         –  to give explanations

  • Describe – people – places & – events in the past.
  • Describe – people – places & – events in the present.
  • Express your ideas about your future.
  • Pronounce words correctly, using the correct stress, & a way of saying the words (intonation).
  • Ask people to explain or repeat sentences and interrupt politely.
  • Give your views and opinions clearly, & listen to the views of others.
  • Use verbs correctly in speaking.
  • Use correct prepositions & articles.
 

 Reading

  • Understand the main events in different kinds of texts (stories, descriptions, explanations).
  • Know about different purposes of texts – dictionaries, phone books, catalogues, internet sites – & use alphabetical order or search engines (e.g. Google) to find information.
  • Practise using different reading skills – skimming, scanning, understanding images (e.g. for maps and instructions).
  • Understand more vocabulary.

  • Plan & draft writing.
  • Organise writing in clear paragraphs – an put ideas in order, using linking words (e.g. because, before, next, finally).

Entry 1/2 – ESOL Progression  Syllabus

Listen & respond  – to spoken language, including simple narratives, statements, questions and single-step instructions.

Speak to Communicate – clearly, & give basic information, feelings and opinions on familiar topics.

Engage in Discussion – with another person in a familiar situation about familiar topics.

PreEntry

Beginner learners who have no knowledge of English may start with an ‘Introduction to Learning for Speakers of Other Languages’, course (ILSOL). It is accredited by Ascentis.

 

Syllabus

Speaking & Listening

  • Respond to greetings.
  • Respond to personal information questions.
  • Recognise and name common nouns – lexical areas include.

Classroom;  home;  colours;  town;  food and drink;  clothes;  parts of the body.

 

Reading & Writing

  • Trace letters of the alphabet.
  • Match upper & lower case.
  • Complete a short form.
  • Spell common cvc words.
  • Read a limited number of common words.
 

FEE PAYMENT COURSES

We offer short preparation courses for this test covering all the topic areas to be tested, and in small groups concentrating on individual needs. Preparation courses are of 6 hours, or more if necessary. They include registration and booking with Trinity and transport to Manchester for the test. Courses are arranged regularly each month, according to need.

The exam is 10 minutes.  There are 2 parts to the exam

  • The Topic Phase.
  • The Conversation Phase.


In the exam

  • The examiner will welcome you.

 

TOPIC PHASE (about 5 minutes)

  • You talk to the examiner about a topic that interests you.
  • You prepare your topic before the exam using the Topic Form.
  • Take your Topic Form into the exam. Give it to the examiner.  Tell the examiner what you are going to talk about.
  • The examiner asks you questions and talks to you about at least 4 things on your Topic Form.

 

REMEMBER!

  • You must prepare a topic and complete a Topic Form or you can’t pass the exam.
  • This is a conversation. Ask and answer questions naturally.
  • It’s important to use the language of Grade 5.
  • Ask the examiner at least 1 question about your topic.

 

CONVERSATION PHASE (about 5 minutes)

The examiner chooses any two of the following six subjects to talk about:

  • Festivals
  • Means of transport.
  • Special occasions, e.g. birthday celebrations.
  • Entertainment, e.g. cinema, television, clubs.
  • Music
  • Recent personal experiences.

 

REMEMBER!

  • The examiner isn’t testing your knowledge of the subjects – only your language.
  • It’s important to use the language of Grade 5.
  • Ask the examiner at least 1 question about the subjects.
  • This is a conversation. Ask and answer questions naturally.

Information for learners –     A2
These tests are needed for Immigration purposes.

You must pass a Secure English Language Test in  at least level A2 to qualify for Further Leave to Remain in the UK (visa extension).

You need this 2 ½  years after arrival on the 5 year partner or parent route to settlement.

You need to take the test at the Trinity centre in Manchester.

 

The A2 test is

  • A 7- minute speaking & listening test. ONLY speaking & listening.
  • This is in a 1 – 1 face to face interview with an examiner.
  • Provisional results are given on the same day.
  • Certificates are usually sent within 7 days.

Preparation courses for the computer-based test – Life in the UK – run for 8 weeks,  with 2 sessions running weekly, of 3 hours each.

The course is learner centred with discussion and explanation in all topic areas.  The materials are produced exclusively by Al Hayat, and include a variety of pictures and prompts to aid understanding.  It develops strategies for reading and understanding how meaning is built up in complex texts.  The course covers all the areas in the ‘Life in the UK’ Home Office handbook;

Practise on-line tests are an integral part of the course, with laptops available for all learners.
